March 2009 Archives

ROES: Basement in Utrecht on March 28th 2009

Finally the pictures from our exposition! Most of our class were working hard to make this possible, specially on that day. The exposition was open from 10am to 3pm and we had to clear the place by 4pm! We had time to set up in the evening before the event and on the day itself in the morning. A short day, but we made it!

The event was spliced into an exposition and a fashion show on a boat. I was participating in the exposition because I felt that the boat trip would not compliment my clothes. I wanted to have more control about what people would see and how I want to be presented, thus I made a black box... In the black box there was a video of the red dress, filmed at a repetition of "De Feeks" by Femke Vernij. She borrowed the dress for her graduation theater production. On the other side of the box I hidden the pictures by Gidi van Maarseveen with gorgeous model Sarie from Micha Models.

See this link http://www.yelenamyshko.net/pages/year3/TRL_expo.html for my personal corner at the exposition.

Here are some pictures from the event. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the photographer. I only know that he studies photography at my school.

Blogger Update and Links!

Well Japan Fashion Week has come to a close but my involvement in the Japanese Fashion Scene has not! I am heading to Tokyo this Monday to attend the writtenafterwards graduation examination show. You can visit their website here. Be sure to read the latest Tokyo Weekender for some inside information on the best stores to visit in Tokyo here, written by Kelly Wetherille!

This month I was also featured by the fabulous Canadian LouLou Magazine. Thanks to Shay of The Ongoing Project for scanning me and sending me the clip! I also completed an interview with Miranda from Stylebyfire (Vancouver) which you can view here. My amazing computer wiz sister will be helping me do some much needed renovations to my blog as well in the next few weeks. Watch out for some exciting new changes. A new banner is in the works as well but it's a surprise!!

Siri Tollerod in Real Surreal Makeup

This is from a new story that I did for issue #21 Dansk Magazine with model Siri Tollerød.
I made paper cut outs for eyes and lips to add to the whimsical surrealism. The words that I wrote on her are grocery lists, to-do lists,reminders....read below............................siri Dansk.jpgDansk Regina Harris.jpgplasticfantastic8.jpg

A Memorable Cho Sungkyong Moment

The Cho Sungkyong commenced its show with endearing charm: a child, holding balloons of a vast array of colors, walking down the aisle in her own little runway show. Indeed, the designer had declared her vision of the self as a "cheerful little girl immersed in retro emotions." But the child herself was the brilliant reminder to all of the dreams, hopes and limitless imagination of childhood and all its wonders.

Here is a shot that captures youthful, undaunted spirit:

Heo Hana

Heo Hana 001.JPG

The dichotomy in the beginning and ending of love was the main theme of hana.h, Heo Hana's self-named womenswear brand. Throughout the collection, Heo highlighted the sincere, the obscurity, and the transcience of love through whimsical fabrics like chiffon and linen. The blinding white of the entire collection, and simple and voluminous silhouettes depicted the unfettered purity of a vulnerable love affair - while also seeming to denote the ease with which even love so passionate can be soon erased and begun anew with another.

Jung Heesuk / Jaison Couture

Jaison Couture certainly overdid itself in "maximalist" fashion. While other designers opted for neutrals and darker shades, Jung Heesuk's elegant ensembles were awash with vibrant colors from beginning to end. Key fabrics included muslin, which accented dramatic lines in gowns, and wool silk, which highlighted the luxury of the traditional suit. Together with exuberant accessories, these powerful, voluptuous pieces certainly captured the beauty and romanticism of the natural feminine form.

Making Way for Ha Sang Beg

Everyone prepares in their own way for a fantastic show, from the professionally pampered:

Hong Eunju

Hong Eunju 002.jpgHong Eunju 001.jpg

Like a child that is delighting in the hidden treasures of her grandmother's attic, Hong Eunju presented a fresh take on old charms and basics. Enzu was wrought with secondhand-seeming pieces, with fabrics like wool and jersey made to look worn through natural washing, and pinched stockings. But lusterless pieces were given new shine with sparkly silver canvas sneakers and unexpected trinkets including safety pin chains and crystal cutlery necklaces. Majestic capes regaled many an ensemble, although these as well were brought down to earth with basic fabrics like cotton, or trimmings such as lace and ribbons that looked as if recycled. This taking the seemingly unremarkable to new heights of imagination emphasized that even the antique can be reinvented into something new and even glamorous.

Jung Heejung

With white as a canvas and free, original form in all her ensembles, Jung Heejung preserved nature throughout her show. The presentation opened boldly with four models each donning a white cotton short-sleeve top starkly accented by a bright red accessory - whether it be a sleeve, a head scarf or a simple red rose. This loud accenting with red and black amid subdued white and navy continued throughout the rest of show. Indeed, while innocence and purity seemed to dominate the collection, flashes of skin through exposed backs and sheer fabrics hinted at and even reassured viewers of the untamed wild always imminent in the outdoors - like hidden seeds waiting to erupt in full bloom among the seemingly lifeless calm.
