Knitting Against Aids
For World AIDS Day 2009 Designers against AIDS, the Pink House (het Roze Huis), Sensoa and the gay/lesbian/bi federation of Antwerp, Belgium organise an amazing knitting benefit. With 'Knitting against AIDS' they want to instigate people to gain awareness concerning the consequences of HIV and AIDS. This will be done through knitting scarfs and organizing an accompanying event which will attract international media and hopefully raise a lot of funds.
'Knitting against AIDS' is a low-effort project where a wide span is created, as goes for prevention as well as the field of social acceptance of HIV-infected people. The aim is to get as many people knitting as possible and for this we are looking for partnerships with schools, societies and homes for elderly for example. Famous designers will be asked as well to knit a beautiful scarf or to customize it.
The DAA is opening up this great benefit to crafters and designers alike by requesting submissions for the benefit. If you are passionate about knitting, or eager to contribute to this great cause the DAA are open to people knitting a scarf themselves. The design is free for people to choose. A unique label will be added to the scarf at a later stage. People can buy the wool themselves, or for classes/larger groups the Pink House will come to deliver it and the scarves will be picked up again. Deadline for the scarves is October 15th.
By the end of October 2009 a photo-shoot will be planned, where celebrities will pose with the scarves and in this manner make this project sustainable. These photos will also be showcased on a bus or tram that will drive through Antwerp for a month.
During 'Take-Care-Week'- the week before World AIDS Day- we dress the Antwerp Stadsfeestzaal (City Festivities Hall) at the Meir with all the scarves knitted and they will also be sold there. All net proceeds will be donated to the Care-for-AIDS fund (Geef-om-Aids fonds) and Designers against AIDS.

Please contact Ninette Murk at Designers against AIDS on +32 3 2373382, also when you're a designer who'd like to make one or more scarves. For the designer scarves we will organize a special auction. Deadline for the scarves is October 15th, you can send them to us at Designers against AIDS, Bredabaan 260 in 2170 Merksem, Belgium.
