Spring Shopping Event Bas Kosters & Mada van Gaans

Two of our favorite designers, Bas Kosters and Mada van Gaans are having their own "vent-prive" in Amsterdam this week. Bas Kosters is known for his extravagant and hand painted clothing and Mada van Gaans has a delicate well-tailored design. With the economic crisis rising we have seen an increase on Facebook and Myspace for "flash sales" from designers looking to make space in their ateliers. Offline meet ups such as Viens dans Mon Dressing are popping up online in the form of websites such as Vent Privet and 88Brands. For more information about the new trends in fashion check the speech given by Xavier Court and Marc Echo.

Until you get your private invitation you can go on Saturday the 25th of April at th+ floor - World Fashion Centre and shop for Bas Kosters and Mada van Gaans.

This is your ultimate chance, your one opportunity to add that one of a kind dress, or that special shirt to your wardrobe. Together they organize their " Spring Shopping Event" at the World Fashion Centre. Mada gives you the opportunity to buy items from her last collections for a very friendly price. Bas has got some vintage items in stock and gives a very nice discount on his web shop articles. Feel very welcome to browse, shop, chat, have a sparkling drink and a spring snack.

I went to your dressing: Viens Dans Mon Dressing

My co-author on Mademoiselle à Paris, Mademoiselle H, went to the Parisian event Viens Dans Mon Dressing, orchestrated by the lovely Nath. Mademoiselle H reports on the event:

"I went to the latest edition of Viens Dans Mon Dressing, the biggest Parisian event for young independent designers and the least I can say is that this event was highly anticipated. There were, literally hundreds of people waiting to go.

IMG 1600

It's a great opportunity to fill your closets and accessories box with delicious new creations at very interesting prices. There is even a small, well-put together selection of articles of second-hand clothing from the best of French brands (Vanessa Bruno, Maje and more).

While the clothing presented was really nice, I turned my eyes more on the accessories: unusual jewelry, like those from Very Sisters, delicate and original or those from Nadja Carlotti, all dressed up in elegant fabric.
In the shoes department... oh my! I discovered Cindy Glass, a young shoe designer who could give Manolo and Christian a run for their money on the originality department as she adds cute details to the simplest of shoes to make them into something highly fashionable.

There was also a few beauty stands like the Gloss'UP make-up bar where you could learn how to apply make-up and get tips to get the most out of your make-up.

In the absence of Mademoiselle, I didn't get to meet with Nath due to crossed wires but VDMD is definitely THE hottest Parisian event for young designers and something not to be missed!"

Tokyo Midtown

Here are some photos of Tokyo Midtown. This is where the majority of shows are held during Japan Fashion Week and where the press and media lounge is located. It is an office and retail complex that includes a mall. The architecture within and around the building in stunning. Here is a photo of me on day one and a few photos from around the building.

Shinmai Creator's Project: Japan Fashion Week

Today was the first day of Japan Fashion Week! It was absolutely amazing. It was beautifully organized and all of the shows went off without a hitch. The first show we went to was the Shinmai Creator's Project. All of the staff working the show wore black suits and were very helpful. This is the 8th Japan Fashion Week and the first year for this special event. The hall had six large T.V. screens along the sides. We each got small packages with Elle Japan Magazines (celebrating their twentieth anniversary!) and a beautiful portfolio of the five designers and their inspirations for their collections. There was even an introduction to the Shinmai Project and those who helped put the project together (in Japanese and English!). The show started on time and to a full house!

The name "Shinmai" means "fresh rice" in Japanese and refers to the new young designers being presented in this show. Fresh (in season) rice represents the new young potential and talent of the designers. This show is intended to help designers with under ten years of experience, introduce their line in Japan. The following designers were selected from a group of fifty two candidates from thirty four schools and seventeen countries: Nima, Donna Egro, Donna Sgro, Aéthéré(e),Shida Tatsuya and Sachio Kawasaki. This was a great selection of designers. They all have very different design aesthetics and it was great to see them all together!

Nima
Nima graduated from the Parsons School of Design in 2006 and was presented with the prestigious Golden Thimble Award for his Thesis. His design philosophy? "To make women feel elegant without trying too hard." Saks Fifth Avenue launched Nima's Collection in their New York store in December 2006. You can visit his website here.

The collection presented by designer Nima was a stunner. He wanted to "create a new reality" that reflects the strength of women. He was inspired by women from the medieval period and he incorporated bold prints, exposed shoulders and royal purples and jungle greens to emphasize this. There were some beautiful winter coats featuring elegant and flattering cuts. There were cropped leather jackets, and exposed gold zippers and buckles. Many of the models wore black booties with peek-a-boo toes. Their hair was natural and flowed along with the silky fabrics. The models strutted down the runway to a hard edged and powerful clanking/techno music. There were a lot of wearable clothes here that will surely be snapped up by buyers!

Donna Sgro

Donna Sgro studied Fashion and Textiles at the University of Sydney. Prior to her design degree she completed an Arts Degree in Art History and Theory and Philosophy. Her designs are modern and full of different variations of colors and cuts. You can visit her website here.

The title Donna chose for her collection this season was Octopus's Garden. She wanted to explore the mysteries of the deep sea and the creatures that live there. Her collection featured a range of styles that could be mixed and matched. The fabrics and trims chosen for this collection are 90% Japanese in origin. Donna also designed the "squid print" for this collection that was hand-printed in Australia. The runway lights were pink polka dots which perfectly suited the happy, fun and playful collection. There were some crazy tights, cool printed separates and some scarves with hoods as well! The models wore loafers in silver and black and white and had loose flowing curled hair. Ruffles, pleats and red lined jackets were prominent as well. There was even a crazy leopard print jumper! Bravo!

Aéthéré(e)

I was not able to find a lot of information about this up and coming designer. His collection was entitled "Men in Box." The designers, Ly-Ling Vilaysane and Adrien Escarvage stated that there are different rules, colors, forms and codes that everyone follows within their own daily lives and societies. We all come from different places and choose our paths and follow them as best we can. These garments were created to be worn for any occasion and in a variety of ways.

Many of the pieces were often reversible and could serve a variety of purposes. Jackets could be turned into bags and vice versa. The style was relaxed and casual but had a great vibe to it. There were a variety of casual kaki colored pieces and some cool jackets. Many of the girls wore strong masculine suits, jackets and pants. The tucks and pleats in the pieces were really unique and it was fun seeing the models transform garments before our very eyes! You can visit the website here for more information.

Shida Tatsuya

Shida Tatsuya graduated from Nagoya Mode Gakuen. He is from Shizuoka, Japan. The title for his collection was "Mix." This simple statement read on his collection synopsis; "To explore the strength and possibility of the style by mixing various materials and colors." His collection was full of colors and a variety of materials draped and sewed together. I've never seen anything like it and it was quite magnificent. There were materials of every kind you could imagine and the models walked barefoot from one circle of light to another on the runway to the next. Many wore large bells around their necks and ankles too! It was something completely different from the three shows we had just seen! You can visit his website here.

Sachio Kawasaki

Sachio Kawasaki grew up in Fukuoka Japan. He graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. His collection was titled "Wave of Sound." It was inspired by Steve Reich and "Music for 18 Musicians." He translated eight minutes of repetitive pulse into twenty visualized looks by using a graphical pattern. Every time a pattern makes a shape it becomes a unique piece of art. He hopes that "each piece will keep existing like a practical painting in your closet." It was amazing collection. Everything was immaculately put together. There were rhinestones on the elbow length gloves and the tights but you could only tell if you looked closely. There were some beautifully shaped bubble skirts and coats as well. The collection was primarily white with black swirles or waves. Many of the coats were embellished with large buttons and fur collars and sleeves. They would be a definite hit! A beautiful collection! You can visit his website here.

Le Divan Exhibition Punk Beijing, China

The launch of the Le Divan channel was a success last Thursday at Punk Bar in Beijing, China. The event UNIFORM x PUNK is one of a lineup of events that The Opposite House's chic basement bar is hosting in order to showcase new talent. "It's like having the after party of a show without the show," says Warren Punk, the bar's manager.

Vip's attended the event, with press and paparazzi to see the collection of the young design team of Aurélien Lecour and Tony Saint Hua. The clothing hung from the ceiling in classic Le Divan style along with bags from The Dowdy Fourhundred leather collection. Warren Pang is heating up the Beijing fashion scene with monthly events featuring local designers. Check out the video coverage on 360Fashion here.

Bernard Buffet, Clematis-no-oka and Tokyo Fashion Week!

Tokyo Fashion Week is just around the corner! This past weekend my parents came to Numazu and I showed them around my beautiful but small city. I finally got to see the beach and it is going to be great in the summer! I can hardly wait. I took my parents to see the magnificent Clematis-no-oka Gardens and we also visited the Bernard Buffet Gallery as well. Check out the wiki entry on him here. We didn't have time to see it because the last bus was leaving but I did get some beautiful postcards. I have also included some fashion week invitations! Things are crazy here as usual but I am starting to get into the swing of things! I am having my birthday party this weekend so I should have some great photos for you soon! I will be posting a short compilation of Paris Fashion Week Favorites as well.

Clematis-no-oka Excursion!

Here are some pictures from our fabulous day trip to Clematis-no-oka! It is a magnificent garden, sculpture and art display located in Mishima, Japan. We took the local train from Numazu to Mishima and then a local free bus directly to the museum. One thing I have discovered about Japan, there are always free buses that take you directly where you want to go. The Buffet Museum is also located a short distance away but we didn't have a chance to get to it. We spent a few hours wandering the magnificent gardens and admiring the beautiful sculptures! My parents are visiting in Japan and we will probably visit this garden again. My Mom is doing a blog about her adventures here and you can visit it and see what she and my Dad have been up to! Click here to take a look! In the gardens there is a beautiful outdoor cafe and you can have tea and cookies and enjoy the view. It will be gorgeous in the summer when everything is blooming and the sun is shining. We just managed to get in this trip before it started to pour for the rest of the weekend. I think my parents brought the dreary Vancouver rain with them. Today we had snow in Numazu but it was more like slush. Phew!

I just returned from visiting fabulous Osaka this weekend! It was full of excitement, shopping and great sites to see. We visited the Osaka Castle, went on the sky high ferris wheel and went to some great cafes. We even found a Spanish restaurant..yum! We stayed in the Osaka Castle hotel and had a waterfront view of the river. Thanks to Makensie for organizing it all! It was the first time I had a chance to stay in a real bed in a long time and it was glorious! Many of my friends have actual beds in Japan but I have a futon. There is no way I could fit a real bed into my tiny apartment! I will be sharing some pictures with you from our adventure soon.

This reminded me of going down into tombs in Eygpt.
Alas there was nothing below but a sculputre of a woman and a man!

Our view from the outdoor cafe! There were adorable pillows
that you could unzip and pull out blankets! It was a little chilly
up on the mountain.

Our view as we were exiting the garden.

This reminded me of my Classics Studies Days. It's a tile mosaic!

Vernissage Galerie Jeanroch Dard - Zachari Logan -The Myth of Pants

The Myth of Pants

Vernissage Samedi 17 Janvier 2009 à partir de 18h00

Galerie Jeanroch Dard
13, rue des Arquebusiers 75003 Paris France
mardi - samedi / 12h - 19h
tel : +33 1 42 71 27 35

Exhibition from January 17th - February 7th, 2009

Zachari Logan was born in 1980 in Saskatoon (Canada) where he currently lives and works.

"My body is a catalyst for my fascination with stereotypic masculine portrayals. Utilizing historic themes of male bravado, heroism and narcissism I juxtapose the mundane realities of everyday contemporary life. The act of weightlifting, attaining a well-sculpted body is envisioned stereotypically as a visual mark of masculine enterprise, an act I partake in on a daily basis. Without needing to see me engaged in the act itself, my drawn body infers a performative athleticism. This athleticism coupled with the theatricality of a doppelganger or triplet existing on the same stage is designed to subtly evoke feelings of competition, fear and omnipotence- all in relation to performance anxiety. Although in most of these drawings I depict my body in a life-sized scale, the pictorial space in these drawings is quite shallow, with enough room for the figures to exist and interact. This lack of spatial depth is referential to Neo-Classical space, in which Spartan bodies were used to visually epitomize the strength of empire. The containment of space in these drawings is structured to illustrate a sense of claustrophobia and is directly referential to the viewer's own body. This is a space that is in-between ormarginal, a visual realm that is too small to exist within comfortably- but is considerable enough to contemplate being in." Zachari Logan

Evian Girls in Hot Pink - Fashion Branding

360Fashion reports - Evian Girlsimage004.png

With the recent explosion of mobile advertising, internet advertising, it's nice to take it offline and give some support to creative industries. Evian represents water, purity, and all the things we dream of when we think about going into nature. The sand from the Evian sand dunes in France, show how soft the sand is that they melt their bottles. This softness of the white sand seems complimented by the bright pink of the brand labeling. With a touch of blue, you have the perfect outfit for the elegant women. It would be interesting to see an entire collection of Evian clothing, and what that would do to enforce the brand status. Would the designers use and reuse the logo throughout the collection, or would it transcend into soft versions of the colors and basic clothing? Who is the Evian woman? It is interesting to see how a brand expands and begins to support the customer's lifestyle. The emergence of a new fashion brand? The Evian Collection?

The Press Release:

To create a lasting visual impression, Evian has partnered with Viridis Luxe to create original wears for the "Evian Girls." The Evian Girls, a favored presence in the Bryant Park tents this past February, will be draped in chic two-toned dresses of "Evian pink" and hot pink, with a plunging neckline held in place by braided straps that flow down the back. These gowns will be crafted from a combination of braided hemp satin and bamboo cotton. The Evian Pink dresses set the tone for the models' overall look, as they inspired the hot pink heel of shoes they will be donning, as well as the deep rose colored lipstick used on the women's lips.

shoes gracienne myers

Because no great outfit is complete without a fabulous pair of shoes, designer Gracienne Myers created custom-designed high heels with exclusively designed fabric emblazoned with Evian labels for the Evian Girls. The folds of the elegant Viridis Luxe gowns cascade down to give way to these unique pink, blue and white pumps, giving the outfit an authentic Evian feel. The shoes will be delivered to the Mercedes-Benz Fashion tents in luxury, transparent shoe storage boxes from a collection Myers recently produced, called "Clearly Glam," made from 100% recycled PET. Evian plastic bottles are also made of PET, with the brand's most popular bottle sizes, the 1 L and 750 mL, containing 25% post-consumer recycled PET.
