Rosemount Australian Fashion Week 2010

Rosemount Fashion Week 2010!
This year Rosemount Australian Fashion Week celebrates 15 years. A range of designers including established, emerging and new will showcase their spring/summer collections over the five day event. Lisa Ho kicks off the week with the show being opened by Indigenous model and Vogue Australia covergirl Samantha Harris and the show being closed by Australian supermodel Alyssa Sutherland.

Rosemount Fashion Week 2010!
Today all the media assembled to register for their passes and mark their spaces on the media risers.

Rosemount Fashion Week 2010!
IMG media manager gave a short speech to the photographers thanking them for coming and explaining why it was so difficult this year to become accredited due to the big focus on bloggers.

Rosemount Fashion Week 2010!
With superstar bloggers such as The Sartorialist, Susie Bubble, and a host of local Australian bloggers, it seems it ruffled more than a few old-school media photographers. Even the bloggers are getting younger - this small boy was seen recording with the camera of his Mac and editing the video to be put online. Bloggers are clearly the new superstars of the fashion weeks (carried over from an article written by Forbes) and those who do not understand new media are worrying about becoming obsolete. Of course the large network television stations did not even flinch with the announcement of online media and made their marks front, center, and big for their tripods.

Sonia Rykiel pour H&M - Paris, December 1st, 2009 - by Patrizia Molechino, The Oracle of Fashion

Rykiel entry.JPG
A very special party was held in Paris at the Grand Palais on December 1st to launch the Sonia Rykiel lingerie collection for H&M.  Around two thousand guests were invited to see a mini-carnival performance, with floats transporting beautiful girls clad in sexy, feminine underwear - easily recognizable as Sonia Rykiel girls - with long, frizzy hair, French berets worn sideways, and lots of stripes.  Stripes as such are not a novelty, but Sonia Rykiel's stripes, well, somehow they are not quite the same as others...  It was joyful and fun-like, with the guests seated under an illuminated blue Eiffel Tower watching the floats emerge from a mini Arc de Triomphe, with a Parisian funfair as backdrop, a surreal theme-park for adults or fantasy world for grown-ups, if you prefer.  This was a very Parisian show, epitomizing the brilliance of the city and of the very Parisian Sonya Rykiel...the guests were both charmed and mesmerized.

The collection is now available from 1,500 stores around the world and there will also be a knitwear range in 200 stores worldwide on February 20, 2010.  It's great lingerie, see the pink satins, so very 1940s in design and sexy in a non-banal way, or the black sets for a more modern concept of elegant seduction.

In the words of Jean Paul Gaultier "Sonia Rykiel is a revolution in fashion.  She makes sexy clothes, but clothes that are very modern, cool and feminine.  She is super-clever, super-talented and I have a big, big admiration for her".  As I am sure we all have...

The Expansion of Fashion Weeks

Article by Marquita Harris for NJAL

Fashion weeks: those ceremonious, frenzied affairs that leave the insatiable salivating for more. They turn conservatives into eccentrics and allow eccentrics to overindulge. Though with the countless fashion weeks already in existence and more designers opting to show collections off the catwalk, are fashion weeks still valid? And will New York, Paris and Milan's grip on the fashion world loosen up?

"There are so many different fashion weeks around the world - it seems as if there is always a fashion week going on somewhere," says Anne Christine Persson, manager of Copenhagen Fashion Week. "Some are definitely better than others, while all of them are trying to claim their position on the global map of fashion and it's becoming increasingly more difficult...to position themselves in a whirlwind of fashion weeks."

Trias, New Spanish Designer at MB Fashion Week

On September 17th, 2009 TRIAS will emerge during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week as the next big force in the fashion industry with the debut of the Spring/Summer 2010 collection. The much anticipated launch will debut designer Joaquin Trías' refreshingly modern yet feminine aesthetic that will quickly take the world by storm.

Joaquin Trías was born in Spain and grew up between the towns of Marbella and Madrid. Educated by an aristocratic family, Joaquin learned the essence and respect for elegance from an early age. The inspiration for TRIAS comes from the sublime and discreet elegance transmitted by the designer's two grandmothers, Cristina Sartorius and Frida Trías. Cristina Satorius, Countess of Quiroga, exuded an untouchable and pure elegance with reserve while Frida Trías, model and muse of Balenciaga, was the person who initiated Joaquin in the fashion world through her glamour "par excellence", seduction through distance and mystery, and knowledge of every detail of luxury without ostentation. This feminine, generational inspiration for the line combined with Trías's yearning for perfection, has created a brand that exuberant respect and strength towards the sophisticated woman.

Trías' search for the clean, pure, perfect, innovative, and impeccable results in designs of natural elegance. Each design is a true architectural masterpiece, with special effects generated through not only exceptionally worked lines but also the election of materials and finishing. Trías is always searching for the perfect textiles to create more sensual effects with riskier finishing, empowering the exclusivity of each item.

Modern, universal, aggressive in its forms, the TRIAS style is a concept of perfect lines for an unbeatable woman.

NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 13: Custo Barcelona known for his extravagant prints and use of electric colored sequence, has sent kisses down the runway this Spring 2010 Fashion at Bryant Park in New York City. What looks more like a pajamarama collection than beachwear and surf, Custo Barcelona has inspired love through his use of lipstick lips puckered up for a big kiss. The collection is humorous and can most definitely find it's way into consumers closets with humor especially in where he's placed the lips on the men's suit. Only for brave men to wear out on a hot date.

Y3 Celebrate FIFA 2010 World Cup at SS 2010

In celebration of the upcoming FIFA 2010 World Cup, the Y-3 Spring/Summer 2010 collection took a global tour of modern sport style, rendered in the label's signature of elegant athleticism. Shown on Sunday, September 13th as part of New York fashion week, the collection underscored an abstract idea of World Cup dressing.

88921024JH012_Y_3_Runway_Sp.JPG

Y-3 is where fashion and sport collide, a fact that was emphasized by the front-row presence of professional footballer Zinedine Zidane. A sport icon and contemporary legend in his own right, Zidane watched as models strode down the catwalk to a soundtrack of American rock classics, Michael Jackson, and symphonic national anthems. Others in attendance included Rufus Wainwright, Lupe Fiasco, Russell Simmons, Devon Aoki, Casey Spooner, Leigh Lezark, and Geordon Nicol.

"This collection was inspired by print. Its something I have continuously done as a designer, so I wanted it to to be very focused. I wanted it to be fun...really playing with texture and using it through print. This bodice in neoprene we worked in a silhouette which is a nipped waste and then comes out which is reminiscent of new look Dior from the 40's. The idea was girls looking in their jewelry boxes and pulling out special things." says Michael Angel.

Michael Angel is clearly developing futuristic shapes, and forward thinking in his prints, shapes, and even by the fact that he has a blog.

Izabela Lapinska "My Little Snail" Paris Fashion Week A/W 2009

Picture 41.png
Polish Fashion designer Izabela Lapinska presented her Fall/Winter collection dubbed "My Little Snail" during Paris Fashion Week on Monday (March 9).
Lapinska, often called "Master of Details" for her hand-made embroidery and decorations, launched her collection for women looking relaxed- despite the fact that it was her first show in the French capital.
She says she is inspired by modern women's daily life, and loves femininity and sensuality in her designs. She designs clothes for women from all parts of Europe, including France, she said after the show.
"I have already designed for French women, I have a bit of experience because French women came to see me in Poland and they have ordered my dresses already, they buy my dresses there," Lapinska said.
An ex-philosophy student, she draws inspirations from everything from classical music to painting. This year, her inspiration for the collection was the snail.
"I was inspired by the snail as an object. As well as it carries infinite possibilities -- you can define and do many things as it is undefined, the possibilities of work that you can do with it are endless," she said.

Paris Fashion Week RTW Part Two

Part two of Paris Fashion Week. I have loved reading all of your comments about your favorite designers! Keep them coming!

Akris
Albert Kriemler created another beautiful collection for the house of Akris. His inspiration was the pavilion in the Jinhua Architecture Park in China designed by Tatiana Bilbao. The pieces were simple, yet elegant. There were some beautiful coats, evening gowns and day wear pieces. While the WWD staff thought it was a bit too abstract but I thought the pieces were beautifully tailored and very futuristic looking.

Inspiration

Balenciaga
Nicolas Ghesquière presented a rather subdued but elegant collection for Balenciaga this season. There were some beautiful architectural looking skirts paired with tight shimmery tops as well as baggy satin pants and belted jackets. It was a beautiful collection but slightly disappointing. Not a huge fan of the loose fitting floral dresses that would make anyone look like a house! It just felt like I was looking at variations of the same ideas and pieces over and over again. What did you think of this collection?

Balmain
Another solid collection put forth by Christophe Decarnin for the house of Balmain. One of the few designers who didn't terrify me with wacky shoulder pads. These were a key element in this collection but they were cool and chic and even I would consider giving them a go. There were sequins, big buckled boots, and tight fitting tuxedo jackets. One of my favorite looks of the collection was a blue sequined skirt with a skin tight jacket (pictured below). There was also a s short, tight fitting dress with a cool variation on the sweet heart neckline and a train (featured left) ! Loved this one.

Comme Des Garcons
Another fabulous Japanese designer. While I was not wowed with her collection for H & M; I was curious to see what Rei Kawakubo would come up with this season. I often find her collections a little bit too off the wall. Not this one! It was more light hearted and featured some great and even wearable looks. More white painted faces here. Not a huge fan of the veils but the hair was magnificent! The designers have been trying hard to come up with some really creative hairstyles this season. There were some cool coats like these ones (featured left and right). They were definitely a highlight of the collection. She also included a bit of plaid which we haven't seem much of this season. Perhaps we overdid it a little last season?

Ann Demeulmeester

Ann Demeulmeester's collection was definitely a dark one. The palette was mostly centered around blacks with a few whites here and there. It was great to see some men on the runway too. They looked utterly fabulous. Now if only more men would dress this way. Mind you, I do have to say that in Japan, the men do tend to get dressed up. They wear beautiful shoes and well fitted garments. Leah and I are always astonished at how great they look! Back to the collection. The models were also wearing what looks to me like feathered head pieces. There were boldly draped tops and dresses paired with skin tight leggings and pants. There were even some great knit wear pieces. I felt like I was looking at a whole new black with this collection!

Christian Dior

I could not help but include all of these images from the Christian Dior collection. It was an absolute stunner and I would have to say one of the top shows of the week. The fabulous John Galliano said he was inspired by 18th Century Persian miniatures . Look at the runway! It would have definitely been a site to see. The gowns were magnificent and accessorized with beautiful jewelry. Everything seemed to fit perfectly in this show. The jackets were flawless and often included unique button placements, fur embellishments and embroidering. Galliano kept with the loose fitting trend but the garments had shape and look like they would have floated down the runway. When he did include a bubble skirt, it was paired with a more fitted top. It was full of color and glamor and represented everything that fashion is!

Dries Van Noten

The Dries Van Noten collection was inspired by Irish figurative painter Francis Bacon. While many designers are sticking with basic variations of black, Dries Van Noten opted for a more colorful palette. These pieces were definitely more light hearted and wearable than others seen this week. There were some great blazers and autumn trenches, elegant pants and wild prints to mix things up a little! In an interview with WWD it was explained that “Bacon’s subjects are disturbing, but so, also, his use of color is disturbing.” Check out the inspiration image below and click on the wiki link for more information.

Gareth Pugh
This year Gareth Pugh decided to show his collection by large screen slide projection! The video featured model Natasa Vojnovic. It was a very futuristic and exciting collection. The models had dramatic white painted faces and were accessorized with some over the top hats. He topped this all off with knee high space looking boots and a lot of shimmery fabrics draped elegantly around the models. What did you think of this show? You must watch his out of the world video that coincides with his show! Click below!

Givenchy

Ricardo Tisci pulled off another great show for the house of Givenchy. It was all tassels galore at this show. There were some magnificent head pieces, tasseled footwear and accentuated shoulder pads. There were even some great leather pieces and architectural looking separates. Some designers sabotage their collections with too much of one theme. Not here! Everything was done tastefully and there was just enough drama and glamor to keep me excited to see what he will come up with for next season!
This number looks like it's right out of Victoria Beckham's closet don't you think?!

Paris Fashion Week Ready To Wear Part One

Paris Fashion Week! There have been some great photos turning up of candid shots of models, journalists and fashion industry members on blogs like The Sartorialist, Style and the City, and Face Hunter. There were definitely some great pieces presented this week at Paris Fashion Week this time around. Some trends that are beginning to take form are: big shoulder pads, black black and more black, over sized blazers and cropped leather jackets. It was really exciting to see some of these shows on WWD. I selected a few pieces from my favorite designers to be published in two separate posts. Hope you all had a magnicifent weekend. I had my birthday bash and will try to post a photo or two. One week until Tokyo Fashion Week!

Jean Paul Gaultier
Jean Paul Gauthier decided to go with a night club theme for this year's runway show. The boy meets girl theme was definitely evident with the oversized suits, slicked back hair and cigarette holders. X's were a big theme in the collection as well. Like Nina Ricci, Lacroix featured these bizaro face mask things that I just didn't get. It takes away attention from the clothes and seems unnecessary. What is your take on this?

Christian Lacroix
What a beautiful collection done by Christian Lacroix! There was a good mix of black jackets and skirts paired with colorful prints and furs to top it all off! Models wore elegant up do buns and were accessorized with dainty strappy heels. Lace was also a big theme in the collection. There were lace tights and dresses with lace embellishments. A great show!

Lanvin
One word..fabulous! This perfectly describes the collection presented by Alber Elbaz for the house of Lanvin. It is unfortunate that the pictures turned out so washed out. It definitely takes aways from the beauty of the clothes. This is perhaps due to the fact that the runway was designed to look like freshly rained on asphalt. The looks were beautifully tailored and chic. Models wore booties, black hair pieces and long gloves. The pieces were simple in design but would flatter any figure at any time of the day. Bravo!

Nina Ricci
What a stunning collection presented by Olivier Theyskens for Nina Ricci. It seems like this may be his final collection of work for the Nina Ricci house but he sure went out with a bang! While I was not a huge fan of the hats that many of the models donned. I have not been a huge fan of the oversized eighties looking blazers that have been popping up on runways everywhere as of late but these were fabulous! There were also some great cropped leather jackets and suits. Save the best for last, his sculpted gowns. They were eye catching and elegant! I wonder who he will design for next. They are surely losing a a great talent. Thoughts?

Emanuel Ungaro
Designer Esteban Cortazar presented a magnificent collection for Emanuel Ungaro. I loved this collection. It was full of bright colorful dresses and skirts and wild polkadot prints and tights. I loved the puffy skirts and skin tights blazers with tights and sandals look. There were also some more architectural looking pieces with great pleating that were eye catching and elegant. There were also some great leather jackets and blouses. Check out the cute clutches many of the models are holding as well!

Giambattista Valli
I thoroughly enjoyed the show that Giambattista Valli presented at Paris Fashion Week. There were many elegant and timeless pieces that would stand the test of time. The lighting and runway were magnificent. I was surprised that WWD was not as fond of the collection. The staff said that the collection shows that "Valli’s vision, marked by grand formality, resists modernity." What did you think?

Vivienne Westwood

This year Vivienne Westwood was inspired by artist
Andrea Montegna who was a Venetian Renaissance painter and student of Roman Archaeology. Her collection was wild as usual and full of crazy colors, tutus and Pamela Anderson! I have to say that I was a little disappointed that she decided to use her in her ad campaigns and runway shoes but I guess it brought her some attention and created some press hype. I definitely wasn't a fan of some of the crazy socks that she paired with the looks but this is often the case with designers. Many of the looks would look better off on their own. There were some crazy prints, wacky tights and off the wall shoes. The whole collection was organized chaos and very entertaining to look at!

One of Montegna's pieces.

Junya Watanabe
I chose to feature Junya Watanabe's collection because it was just so unique and creative. The collection was presented to Puccini's Madame Butterfly and Tosca. I am not a huge fan of the puffy jacket but there was something about the way the collection was presented and the way the clothes fell on the models. Some of the pieces looked like ocean waves. The collection consisted mostly of draped black pieces, tights and oxfords. The hairstyles were out of this world! They looked like black balls of fire placed high atop the models' heads. The models faces were also painted white. What's your take on this collection?

Yohji Yamamoto
With Tokyo Fashion Week rapidly approaching, I have become increasingly interested in Japanese Fashion Designers. Yohji Yamamoto has been one of them. While he is not presenting at Tokyo Fashion Week, it was great to see some of his magnificent designs for this year. The collection consisted mostly of black and red. The majority of the black pieces were paired with red shoes or red panels peeking out of large jackets with cool cuts. The models wore their hair in messy buns and pony tails that featured cool geometric patterns and red hair spray. The finale included five models wearing red dresses and jackets and red shoes gathering in a circle. It must have been very magical to see this show live! It's unfortunate that he won't be showing at Tokyo Fashion Week!

Yves Saint Laurent

Stefano Pilati presented some solid pieces for the upcoming fall season. The models were wearing sky high black pumps with cool criss crossing straps. Their hair was tied back tightly and the accessories were kept elegant and simple. There was a large collection of leather separates, dresses and even a one piece in this collection. There were also some great suits in black and grey pin stripe. There were also a several high waisted and long, tight grey skirts paired with beautiful crisp white blouses that were elegant and very versatile. It was a great collection and good to see that Pilato is continuing the legacy of the fabulous Yves Saint Laurent.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2009 RTW Wrap Up Part Two

FINAL NEW YORK FASHION WEEK POST! Wow! I don't know how all the other fabulous bloggers do it. As you know, many of us work full time and blog in our spare time. I just don't know how everyone finds the time. Nevertheless here it is !! Japan pics to come soon!

Philip Lim
This is one of the best runways seen throughout New York Fashion Week! While many designers are cutting back and using mannequins, Philip Lim seemed to spare no expense with his runway show. Look at the lighting and set up! WOW! Many of the looks included maroon tights and fabulous furs. The were also some great prints. The collection was detail conscious and full of fabulous separates that could be mixed and matched for any occasion!

Alexandre Herkovitch
Alexandre Herkovitch did florals like we have never seen this season. There were floral sequined dresses, jackets and blouses paired with shimmery tights, all under bright pink lighting. While many of us shy away from stripes of any kind, these were body flattering and vertical! Hurrah! Models also wore some fabulous head bands and little black gloves. I must find some of those sequined tights. OO la la!

Alice and Olivia
There was just something about this Alice and Olivia collection. The clothes were presented in images! The models were all featured in fabulous and creative poses and the clothes were inspiring and cool. Don't you just drool over these photos? I love the photo of the model in the big baggy blue sweater (featured below).

Anna Sui
Anna Sui surely shut up the critics who called her collections too bohemian and similar this season! This collection was inspired by the paintings of 19th Century artist Toulouse-Lautrec. There were fabulous feathered head pieces, glamorous necklaces and tasseled booties. Anna Sui is not to be underestimated!

One of Toulouse-Lautrec's Paintings

Betsey Johnson

BETSEY! What happened? Where is the fun runway? ACK! The pieces she presented were great nonetheless but just didn't have the Betsey feel. She held the fashion show at her studio in a fifties inspired malt shop setting. Her pieces are always, and will always be fabulous regardless of where she presents them. I wonder if she still did a cart wheel after she presented her collection?

Carlos Miele
Carlos Miele presented a more formal collection consisting of formal gowns and dresses. I loved how he paired the fancy dresses with a more casual basic black jacket. The gown (below) is just a peek at some of the beautiful pieces he presented! I love the effect of the black and white intertwining throughout the dress. What a treat!

Carolina Herrera
Carolina Herrera! For some reason I have been drawn to the dressier and more sophisticated looks this season. This collection was marvelous. It was full of color and life and refreshing elegance. WWD thought that the shiny fabrics were a little overdone and took away from the collection, but I thought they were vibrant and exciting! There were some magnificent figure hugging gowns and a great deal of volume and ruffling at the bottom. It didn't look overdone or out of proportion in any way. There were also some great day wear coats and dresses. The quality and tailoring of the fabrics was top notch!

J. Mendel
I have always been a fan of the gorgeous gowns created by Gilles Mendel for J. Mendel. The fur vests and impeccably tailored cropped leather jackets were a great contrast to the elegant evening gowns he showed. This collection was wide ranging and full of possibilities. Look at the two gowns here (left and right). He definitely proved his versatility with this collection. Hope some of these gowns get picked up for red carpet events, they would surely make the best dressed list!

Jill Stuart
Jill Stuart sure featured some fabulous footwear and head gear for fall! Many of the shoes had peek-a-boo cut outs and sky high heels or knee high laced up leather boots. These were contrasted with feminine, ruffled and bowed dresses. I loved the satin dress paired with purple jacket (below).

Derek Lam
Derek Lam presented yet another elegant collection. The thick beautiful coats were lined with fur and featured complimenting and contrasting linings. There were shimmery dresses and skirts, as well as lots of leather, strappy heels and black ankle booties. Tweeds and draping were also prominent in this collection.

Marc by Marc Jacobs
What a fun and playful collection Marc put together for this season's Marc by Marc Jacobs Collection. I always enjoy his collections but oftentimes I find that many of the looks would be better off alone. This season the pieces just seemed to mesh well together. There were tweed coats, baggy dresses paired with funky boots and colorful tights! These will surely fly off the racks!

Marchessa
I gasped when I saw the gowns that were created by Georgina Chapman for Machessa! The silhouettes were stunning and featured many layers and shapes. Most of the pieces were in charcoals and greys but the shapes were breathtaking. In an interview with WWD she said that she "wanted to make [the collection] all about fairy tails."

Max Azria
All I have to say about this collection is OO LA LA! Max and Lubov Azria sent a futuristic and hard edged collection down the runway this season. There were a lot of leather pieces and uniquely draped dresses. WWD thought that this collection was unappealing and too Gothic and unflattering but I thought the pieces were well fitting and eye catching! Look at the draping of the two looks featured here!

New York Fashion Week Fall 2009 RTW Wrap Up Part 1

PHEW! Almost there, I guess many of you are focusing on London Fashion Week now but I started to make these posts and I am determined to finish them! This is part one and I hope to finish the last part soon. I also must feature the magnificent photos of the Clematis-No-Oka garden we went to over the weekend. Magnificent. Please visit the fabulous Leah's blog to read about our adventure before I have a chance to post about it! It's really great, check it out and drop her a comment!

Marc Jacobs
Talk about some crazy hairstyles going down the runway for Marc Jacobs! When interviewed by WWD he asked “What? Is all black going to help the economy?” Love it. This collection was fun and playful full of color and life in a time of gloom and doom. There were some magnificent cape like coats in vibrant yellows and reds. Again, you are probably tired of hearing me say this, but am not a huge fan of those wild shoulder pads! What is your take on the shoulder pad craze this season?

Michael Kors
I am not completely sold on Michael Kors yet but how can I not feature the fabulous Project Runway Judge? It's too bad the show is facing so many legal woes and may not air this season. Nevertheless, his collection featured a lot of great timeless staple pieces. There were a few bright colors incorporated into the black based collection (left). The coat on the right looks magnificent with the black silhouette doesn't it?

Narciso Rodriguez
Last year my sister and I bought Narciso Rodriguez perfume for my Mom and she was a changed women. She only uses it on special occassions but she says it makes her feel special and fantastic when she puts it on. This is how I felt when I looked at his magnifcent collection. It was full of body hugging pieces that were fabulously tailored and caused my jaw to drop! Not eveyone can make camaflouge look cool but there were some great jackets and dresses that would make any woman swoon. I was not a huge fan of the bizarre cut out hats but nevertheless I was wowed by this collection!

Zac Posen
Zac Posen presented an interesting and very glamourous collection this season. I was not a huge fan of many of the large shoulders but I thought it was definitely worth highlighting. There were some amazing gowns and interesting cuts as well. There were also a few great pant and skirt suits. These were my two favorite pieces from the collection (left and right).

Proenza Schouler
The collection put together by Jack McCollough and
Lazaro Hernandez for Proenza Schouler was a stunner! There were some great tweed looks (see below) as well as some stunning evening wear dresses. I loved the gold sparkly dress (featured left) and the fabulous layered dress (featured right). Shorts with tights were also another key element in this collection. This trend is huge in Japan. Many women wear cool capris and shorts with leggings and big chunky boots. Thre were also a variety of casual, yet chic jackets gracing the runway this season.

Ralph Lauren
Ralph Lauren included three large chandeliers above his runway! Many of the pieces were in earth toned colors of blacks, greys and browns. I wasn't too keen on all of the velvet-like materials but there were many great pieces. Look at this dress on the left, doesn't it look like a flower? The collection also featured some magnificent hats (see below).

Rodarte
I have always been a fan of the collections presented by the Rodarte women (Kate and Laura Mulleavy). There was a whole lot of leather presented this season. There were leather pants in a variety of colors and hard mini dresses with long sleeves. They might be a hard sell during these times but it sure was a fabulous show! Their collection was inspired by architect Gordon Matta-Clark. In the seventies, He created a series entitled "Building Cuts" where he took apart buildings that had been abandoned. They captured the collage idea brilliantly!

Temperly London
Many designers have been using mannequins this season. The clothes have to be dramatic and styled fabulously for them to stand out from the masses of houses presenting collections. Temperly London was one of the few houses that pulled the effect of effortlessly. I loved the way the clothes were displayed. They looked chic, wearable and fun! The cropped leather jacket (left) was different than any of the jackets coming down the runway this season. Don't you love the hats and poses of the models on the right?

Tory Burch
This season Tory Burch included a lot of casual street style pieces intermingled with rough leather and biker boots. There was just something about this collection that grabbed my attention. The cardigans, vests and blouses all seemed to fit into the hard look. The pieces are simple, yet have a playfulness to them.

Berlin Fashion Week A/W09 30paarhaende

Berlin Fashion Week A/W09 30paarhaende

"30paarhaende" is a label of the FHTW Berlin and is managed by students in the final semester of the fashion design courses. The team and its CEO, also a student, experience the realistic life of a company in the fashion business from initial design to final production.

With a straight wide leg cut the pants seemed very well fit to the German woman's shape. The classic dresses had small details such as shoulders with ribs, v backs, and thick lines running down the front.

Prof. Uwe Janssen, Head of Design, is mentoring the project for the 10th year. The label has been developed in the direction of modern classic. This is the second time the creation has been presented on the catwalk of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin.

Berlin Fashion Week A/W09 Scherer Gonzalez

Constanze G. Gonzalez and Paul Scherer are the creative force behind the Berlin-based fashion label Scherer Gonzalez, founded in 2004.

The show was a mix of fairy tale nymph creatures fresh out of the forest, with the models wearing headdresses a mile high with flowers, twigs, and hair woven in between.

This was the first show in a long time where models were instructed to have fun and "act" out as if on a photo shoot at the end of the runway. This definitely pleased the photographers and was a change from the other fashion straight runway shows of today. The models clearly enjoyed each look as they paraded along the runway, glancing arrogantly in mirrors, hiding behind fluttering fans, winking, smirking, and flirting with the cameras.

Berlin Fashion Week A/W09 H. Xan Koca

One of the most innovative and top fashion shows of the Berlin Fashion Week, H. Xan Koca is hot with metallics, stripes, interesting sleeves, and black and white.

The initiation of the winter collection are a selected few digital-portrait-paintings of the contemporary history.

The view of folded fabrics, asymmetric drape, round ample forms are well translated to the present and linked further. He says, "I'm feeling like an archaeologist searchin beautiful elements of the history, to create my own story."

The silhouettes are physical and flattering. On the one side, the slides are clear and concret, on the other they can only be guessed. Clearly dominated, by classic high-end solids coupled with natural contrasts, that leads an orientation in the avantgard.

"Rocky S, the very bright, young, talented fashion designer is one of Bollywoods ace fashion designers, talks to Nisha Chainani about none other than fashion and movies." reads the web.

"What prompted you to enter into the field of fashion designing?
From a very early age I was always interested in clothes and I always wanted to dress myself up. Then when I joined college I wanted to buy clothes all the time, give suggestions to people on what to wear and what looks nice and that kind of thing. My only mental preoccupation at that point of my life seemed to be clothes, clothes, clothes, so one day I decided to take this very haunting interest in fashion a step further and do a course in fashion designing and see how passionate and interested I really felt." from an interview on india visitin formation

"Rebellious. Rambunctious. Rocker. Rider. Michael Ball is anything but your average CEO. Rock & Republic began with a single, now legendary pair of jeans and in just six short years, Ball has transformed Rock & Republic into the most successful luxury denim brand in the world and a dominant player in the premium luxe lifestyle market." reads the website of Rock and Republic.  With an excellent use of Adobe flash, the Rock and Republic website is one of the best experiences we have had on the web. Who knows how it will load in Asia, but on the European chello.nl connection, it's very fast to load and has innovative navigation. We enjoyed the Runway show in the Women's Collection link which is very web 2.0 friendly.

Runway coverage by Bee-Shyuan Chang (lagatalista.blogspot.com):

Other designers may be more haute, edgy or sophisticated, but Rock & Republic's show is always an unabashed fun time. Some seasons the line's unwavering commitment to bombshell sexuality appears awkwardly out of sync, but with an aggressive sexuality theme currently running through London's fashion scene, Rock & Republic's Spring showing was on point. Models with sleek, shiny hair and smoky eyes stomped down the runway sporting sky-high stilettos and bandage dresses, all the things that highlight and exaggerate their otherworldly proportions. Ruffled minidresses- and we're talking mini- in black and white were scene-stealers especially on Chanel Iman and Du Juan. Sticking to the grey-scale theme,  the line also stayed true to their denim roots by showing jeans tight enough to be leggings with nouveau washes including a grey and white cracked finish that would be perfect with a basic tee.

VENEXIANA SS09 MBFW

Since its launch in 2003, Venexiana has built a house on over-the-top femininity for the socializing set. Think satin ruched dresses, Swarovski bedazzling and marabou trim. That said, her showing at New York Fashion Week did not disappoint. Looks veered heavily towards cocktail and evening wear in a muted palette of dusty pinks and shades of Prussian blues. Designer Kati Stern was originally an architect in Budapest before making the move to fashion, which perhaps explained the stiffer construction on some of the dresses with corsets holding everything tidy. Interestingly, the stronger looks were her flowing, cut on the bias dresses, including a floral floor-length stunner that looked more relevant to today's mobile woman. by Bee-Shyuan Chang.

Queen of the grown-up hipster, Karen Walker S/S '09

PICT0008.jpgPICT0009.jpgPICT0012.jpg

In spite of the torrential downpour, wet fashionistas lined up and waited for entrance to the Karen Walker show in lower Chelsea. Notables in the crowd included a predictably made-up Lynn Yaeger seated next to Mickey Boardman of Paper mag. The downtown magazine set was in the house with the Nylon magazine staff holding court near the end of the runway. The show started easy and relaxed and sustained the breezy tone throughout. Chambray basics and silk taffeta dresses cut in loose silhouettes and dropped shoulder sleeves looked perfectly ready for a below 14th street summer foray, with a washed blue silk tank dress using a tie front and cut-outs at the waist being the crowd stunner. To further the effect of youth languor, the models sported prettily dissheveled hair, sometimes with kinks built-in, and a whited-out makeup palette which all contributed to the coolness factor of Ms. Walker's designs, as if they were fresh from a night partying at Santos Party House. Model newcomer Hyoni, fresh off a win at the Ford Supermodel of the World contest, was a surprising standout especially in an oversized cream bamboo t-shirt with leopard print silk taffeta shorts. Ms. Walker also debuted her eyewear line with updated takes on the Wayfarers and vintage 60s cat-eye. While the eyewear lookbook left at each seat featured a better lineup, the redos of the Wayfarers seemed too commercial as just about every new eyewear line has featured some update of the classic Ray-ban. But you can hardly blame her for she knows her customer base well, particularly the sophisticated hipster who has outgrown in-your-face style in favor of a more subdued version of downtown relaxation, and there a tweak on the Rayban would be surely coveted.

First Party Pics! La Perla NY Fashion Week kickoff

PICT0013.jpg
PICT0016.jpg
Leigh Lezark stopped by, as well as Byrdie Bell. U.S. Open doubles player James Murray also made a late appearance. Otherwise, the La Perla party at the Empire Hotel rooftop was a smattering of industry folks and scantily-clad models. Having been spoiled this August, I certainly wasn't used to the humidity, but that was quickly cooled with a glass of bubbly. A perfect way to kick start a busy week.
