Holiday 2009: The Outlook for Apparel

As the U.S. economy looks towards recovery, consumers continue to feel the effects of the recession, job losses, and last year's decline in net worth. According to Cotton Incorporated's Lifestyle Monitor™ survey, 83% of U.S. consumers are "very" or "somewhat" concerned about a future reduction in household income. Although consumers' optimism about the economy has risen from this time last year, their optimism about their personal financial situation has remained flat. Likewise, the Consumer Confidence Index is up from last year, but remains well below its 2007 level. As consumers embark on holiday gift shopping, continuing economic concerns are expected to restrain their purchases -- the National Retail Federation (NRF) predicts that holiday sales will decline 1.0% from 2008. However, the expected decrease is much less severe than last year's 3.4% drop in holiday sales and well under the forecast 3.0% decrease in total retail sales for 2009.

This new fabulous show by Viktor & Rolf recycles the idea which they explored during their winter 1999 haute couture show yet reverses the thing as they undress the models this time…They remind me of the little grey men who help the onagata performer to change outfits during the episodes of a kabuki performance. They come in, pull a few strings, et voila transformation!!! Not only was the show inspired by recycling, the collection piece also shapshifted from one model to the other, while in the end the supreme piece went from a skirt to an exaggerated collar.

Returning to Elbez' African birthplace for inspiration, he walked a sharp edge, balanced between rigorously urban simplicity and explosively fierce embellishment, sourced in African tribalism. A powerful essay on womanhood, it began with no-nonsense, clean silhouettes cut from matte stretch materials with a molded structure. Dresses and coats were cut roomy in the shoulder, tapering to clutch the hips.

The technical starkness was gradually steered away from minimalism-by-rote with the addition of chunky metal and rock-crystal jewelry and beaded spine-tracing zippers, building up to dynamic feats of diagonal pleating that crossed the torso in one direction and shot across the hips in the other, reinterpreting early Art Deco with a twist of Biba for elegant, highly functional women.

Maison Martin Margiela, Alice in Wonderland and Zink Magazine are in sync this fall twisting and exaggerating classic dressing. Searching for excitement in coats, tailored pants and knits plus the ongoing tussle over whether a skirt should be long, short, or neither.

At Margiela overcoats have a new sleeve, widely curved backward in a flattish, geometric way that, after several reiterations in beige leather, red wool, and a gray peacoat, looked groundbreaking and desirable.

The contribution to pant design is more experimental. In one instance, it's only an illusion--tailored at the front, tights at the back--but in the other, wide-legged and elegantly cut from menswear fabric, it's almost the most accomplished shape of the season.

The Copenhagen Climate Change Agreement: Failure or Success?

As we are approaching to the end of this torrential year of 2009, heads of state and government and negotiators from 193 countries concluded the Copenhagen Conference with a last-minute, three page framework document for a new global climate change deal (the "Copenhagen Accord"). Hailed by some as a foundation for further progress, and derided or rejected by others as 'greenwash' (sounds good but really is not) and an outright negotiating failure, the Copenhagen Accord sets out a first basic agreement on key elements of the global climate change framework for the years to come. Negotiations towards a more detailed legally binding agreement and pressure towards a more ambitious outcome will continue throughout 2010 and possibly beyond. The parties agreed a review of the Accord and its implementation would be completed by 2015.
