Who's Terry? - Of Men and Garments

Who's Terry?, originally uploaded by elemmaciltur.

Start: 14th January 2010
Finish: 21st August 2010
Needles: 3.5 mm and 4 mm Addi Turbo
Yarn: "Saphir" by Bernetta Wolle; 65% new wool, 15% super kid mohair, 20% nylon; Colour #438.02 (beige/natural), dye lot #9006381
Pattern: "Terry's Pullover" by Carol Feller, from Interweave Knits, Holiday Gifts 2009
Modification: Knitting the sleeves in the round. I really cannot fathom why the designer knitted the body in the round and knitted the sleeves flat (she said it's easier to join)...but I think that it's kinda nonsense and seaming down the sleeves totally beats the purpose of this otherwise wonderfully seamless construction....because it's obvious that it can be done seamlessly.

Instant gratifications

...by getting a pair of fingerless mitts for Nikolaus from a great friend, the Wollmeise herself.

I don't know which pattern she used. There are several similar patterns to be found on Ravelry. The colourway she used was "Okzident" from the Sock-Club set from March 2009. I will definitely knit myself a pair, but I will need to add a longer thumb gusset to it, so that my thumbs won't be so exposed.

Sorry about the long silence. The backlight on my laptop screen has decided to give up a month ago and I still haven't got a new laptop. Right now, I just make-do with tilting the screen back to an angle and shining two lamps onto the screen, which allows me to see what's going on, but is pretty straining on the eyes, since everything is quite dark. Anyway, having left my blog idle for such a long time is really making me restless. So, I thought that I should update anyway, since the photos are already there.

I really used my offline time very well. I mean, I couldn't get online at home and the only entertainment I had were books, TV, music and knitting. So I got very prolific with knitting and have some FOs to show and this here is the first one.

As the weather is turning cooler, I have been trying to get warm by putting on warmer garments at home instead of turning on the heater, just to save energy (and the costs that entail). I have been meaning to knit myself more cardigans and jackets, because I like the fact that I put them on and take them off easily without so much fuss that comes with jumpers. To my dismay however, the only jacket I have is the Janker I knitted three years ago. So, I set out to knit myself cardigans and jackets.

I can't exactly recall when and where I first saw Jane Ellison's Queenlands Collection Book 9, but I remember distinctly that I was mesmerised with the patterns in that book. I set out to get a copy of the book but couldn't find anyone who carried it in Europe. Online queries to shops in the USA who carry the book bore no fruits (i.e. they didn't even bother to answer) and so I didn't think much of it until recently.

This brilliant idea came to me out of nowhere. A friend of mine from Munich emigrated to New York a while ago and so I thought that I would ask her to find the book for me. As my luck would have it, she actually found an LYS who carried the book and bought it and sent it to me.

The cardigan "George" had caught my eyes ever since I have seen the preview of the book on the internet and since I have been seeing this kind of cardigan in shops everywhere, I have vowed to knit myself that cardigan. And there was the opportunity.

Halfdome for Jason

Halfdome for Jason, originally uploaded by elemmaciltur.

Start: 9th May 2009
Finish: 10th May 2009
Needles: 3 mm / 80 cm and 3.5 mm / 80 cm Addi Turbos
Yarns: CC using Lanartus "Brando", colour 1468 "Grey", MC using Filatura di Crosa "Zara" colour 1466 "Red"
Patterns: "Halfdome" by Jesse Loesberg, aka Yarn Boy, in Knitty Summer 2006
For: Jason P.

Last week, I found out that an internet friend, Jason, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer in March and was going through chemo, had recently received some pretty bad news about his condition, i.e. the cancer is spreading and there's not much else that can be done....

A whole load of people over at Men Who Knit are knitting squares to be assembled into a blanket for Jason. However, at the rate the cancer is going, the blanket has to be done fast and so the deadline to send in the squares over to the USA is for the end of May (find more info HERE). Actually this wouldn't have been the problem for me, but I just can't get the required yarn easily enough here in Germany. Besides, I know that Jason is based here in Europe, so it wouldn't make much sense for me to send something over to the USA, only to have it be sent back to Europe again.

So, I sent off an email to Jason - and I'm happy to have heard back from him - and told him that I'm going to send something off directly to him. I would have loved to knit him a blanket, but I won't make it in time, so something fast has to be knitted up. And what's better than a kind of chemo cap for a sexy chap who has lost his hair? ;-)

I've never knitted anything for someone with cancer before, so I don't know how sensitive they are. I thought that 100% merino should be fine....we'll see. As for the pattern, I thought that it shouldn't be a full hat because the weather is getting warmer, but should still offer some warmth and so Halfdome was the perfect choice.

Halfdome is a super fast knit. I like it, but I didn't like the fact that there's a seam (although to tell you the truth, you can't feel it...but for someone who hasn't got hair, you might be able to feel it).

I'm going to knit another one in the round instead and send it off to Jason along with this one.

Knitted Mini-dress and a Knitter's equivalent to a Swiss Army Knife

FO: Rothko's No.5 / No.22, originally uploaded by elemmaciltur.

Start: 6th March 2009
Finished: 18th April 2009
Needles: 4 mm and 4.5 mm Addi Turbos
Yarns: GGH "Linova"; 74% cotton, 26% linen; 4 balls of #35 "Hummer", 5 balls of #36 "Orange" and 2 balls of #6 "Red"
Pattern: "Minikleid in Rottoenen", model no. 29 from Rebecca Magazine #39. Ravelled.
For: Knitted for the shop - Lanaiolo
Modification: Knitted the body in the round up to the armhole point, then knitted the front and back separately back and forth. Sleeves are knitted according to the pattern, but used the size for 40/41 instead because the sleeves for 38/39 seemed to turn out tiny. I substituted the small striping from the pattern's #23 "red-brown" to #06 "Red".
