International topmodel Lonneke Engel has been asked to be the ambassador of the Green Fashion Competition. In this video she explains why she decided to join this cause and that she is very proud to be a part of it. If you ask her everybody should enter into this competition because you have amazing chances.
Besides the many financial prizes with 25.000 euro’s promissed to the winner, the selected teams will receive business workshops how to make their brand succesful. Because the competition is all about mixing eco with profit! This is a very powerful message and a great opportunity for emerging designers in this time of crisis. Things need to change! People need to start thinking about innovative design with regard to planet, people and animals. But also turn this switch in their heads, because money needs to be made more than ever! In a country where artists are afraid that their funding will be cut because of the new government, it is quit special to have a chance to win so much money and knowledge!
360Fashion will be closely watching this competition unfold. And secretly preparing to participate with our own special project!
Amsterdam International Fashion Week (AIFW) and the Dutch ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) have launched a competition in token of the international Year of Biodiversity; The Green Fashion Competition. The Green Fashion Competition is a competition for entrepreneurs in the fashion industry, for individuals (and teams) with a vision of what the future of fashion should look like. The aim of the competition is to find the talented entrepreneurs in the industry who aim to create a fashion business while sustaining biodiversity.
Biodiversity is a term often foreign to those not interested in plants and agriculture. Yet biodiversity is ‘all around us’ and plays a much more important role than most people think. ‘Bio’ means life, and ‘diversity’ means variation.
Biodiversity can therefore be described as the variation of all kinds of life, which together create a balance in nature. Biodiversity covers all of the world’s ecosystems; from the smallest insect to the largest mammal and from microscopic plants to the tallest trees. It includes life on land, in she sky and in the sea. It is the totality of all life together which form ‘biodiversity’.
Biodiversity creates clean water, fertile grounds and a stable climate. It also produces food and building materials for residencies, clothing, fuel and medication.
Mankind’s consumption of raw materials and modern production techniques are having an extremely destructive effect on the world’s biodiversity. Examples of this are the unaccountable amounts of water wasted in many production techniques, the chemicals used in dyes and other treatments that pollute the environment, and the extent to which large scale agriculture (eg cotton fields) destroy habitats.
The Green Fashion Competition aims to create the foundation for a fashion industry that is produced in a manner wherein biodiversity is preserved. The only way in which this can be done is when entrepreneurs are able to find a balance between the economical, ecological and social impact of their ideas; a balance between People, Planet and Profit. The Green Fashion Competition will provide the entrepreneurial talents within the Dutch fashion industry with coaching, support, an international platform and sizeable financial aid for launching their ideas.

This year I once again had the honour of interviewing Paola Ivana Suhonen, designer of Ivana Helsinki. Paola is such a charming lady and is always very well dressed in a sort of rock’n’roll versus hippy chic style. This years collection is called Copper Chain. The copper chains are intergrated into most clothes. I absolutely love the metallic copper thread which was integrated into the knits. It is nice to see a deigner do something different with chains, because it’s a trend which you see quit a lot on fashionista’s. At Ivana Helsinki the chains were exaggerated and became huge accessories. Which were complimented by the chains which were hanging from the ceiling. Paola really knows how to take people into her story, into the concept of the collection! The shows always open up with a video which is created by Paola herself. Besides being a succesful designer she is studying in New York to be a filmmaker. I think it is special when a designer goes beyond the clothes and has some quality skills to add more to the overal impression of the brand. When you know the ropes you can have more control and it’s informtation coming straight from the designer without interpretation from others. So there is a straight dialogue between the designer and the guest/client. Absolutely fantastic as always!!!
